I'd like to do some server-side script and widget programming. First, I
need to be able to view the website locally (on my laptop used as a development
system).

Installing a webserver with PHP support will let me view the website locally on
my laptop and edit the raw markup in a text editor (or possibly WYSIWYG in
Eclipse)...

I originally made up this website on
SynthaSite.
They had been rated #1 in
this comparison.
They are free and include a pretty nice drag&drop interface for building your
website. I would recommend them to anyone wanting to build a simple website.
Towards the end of December, their upload utility exhibited a bug that prevented me
from uploading any files. The support people were very quick to let me know
that it was their bug. I was eager to post my Christmans photos. After
waiting a couple weeks for a fix from them, I decided to move over to GoDaddy.
The costs on Godaddy are still pretty reasonable, I have some more control over what I can do
(create databases, write PHP and servlet code, etc). You don't get the nice
drag&drop interface, but that's OK. Here are a few details on how I moved this
website to GoDaddy...
